How Important is 'Rocket Singh-Salesman of the Year'?

Marketing is a tough field. Just having studied marketing for a little time, I know that there is a lot of things that I am yet to grasp. Having good skills alone is not enough. When you become a sales executive, knowing to keep up the customer's satisfaction is also very vital. When marketing builds a certain interest for a product or service, sales eventually lead to the activities that actually end up selling these products. No matter where you work if you are a salesman, you need to work really hard to attain the target. And what better way than to know all about this than by watching 'Rocket Singh-Salesman of the Year'?

Of course, there are movies that talk about marketing and sales. And the one movie which shows the actual backstory of a salesman is 'Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year'. Released in 2009, this movie is directed by Shimit Amin. The protagonist of the movie is Harpreet Singh Bedi, who is played by the talented Ranbir Kapoor. This movie narrates the actual struggles salespersons face to survive in this field.

Ever since he can remember, Harpreet Singh has wanted to work as a salesman. While his best friend tries to convince him to opt for a better career, he stood strong to follow his dream. He thought his skills would do wonders in this field. But he witnessed a world that pushed him down both physically and mentally.

A salesperson has to face a lot of challenges. They have to get orders from clients, cross their target before the deadline, and attain a certain goal in any way possible. If they are unable to do these tasks, they will go out or rather, will be thrown out of the field. When it comes to this job, the pressure is always the best friend. A salesperson needs to secure his/her sales in any cause. And each person has their own territory to gain clients and orders. In the movie, there is a scene where Harpreet's colleague comes and says, "If you steal my sale, I will finish you". This is roughly around the time when he joins the company. This itself shows the competition between salespeople.

Some people use certain tricks to convince their clients. And this may succeed in building a relationship and getting orders from a client. But our hero is truthful to his work. And the same quality of his creates trouble for him. Harpreet was not ready to accept the bribe offered by a client. For the same, he was not allowed to have a direct deal with any client. So, from this, it is clear that being completely honest is not at all possible in sales. And we can see the struggle behind getting a commitment too.

Everyone faces hard times to attain success. Sometimes, no one will understand you. Harpreet had to face this situation too. No one tried to understand or even listen to him. Everyone laughed at him, rejected him. He was considered as a big 'zero'. Still, he never quit nor did he give up.

In the movie, every employee except Harpreet gave importance to profit and promotion. But our hero understood his customers. He saw their emotions and built a healthy relationship with them. While AYS Corporation increased its sales records, they actually failed to satisfy its customers. But Harpreet's own 'Rocket Sales Corporation' guaranteed 100% customer satisfaction. Mr. Singh believed that we have to maintain the promise given to a customer. Considering this as the most important factor, Harpreet and Rocket Sales Corporation wonderfully do their work.

Now, let us look at the sales techniques they use. In the beginning, we see the Sales manager of AYS Corp. Nithin using certain crooked tricks to get the needed information. He gives bribes and does anything to secure his clients. This becomes a short-term technique and instead, the way Rocket Sales Corp performs slowly becomes 'history'. The 24-hour service and 2-year warranty with confident presentation grab the attention of the clients towards Rocket Sales Corporation. This becomes a long-term technique which helps them to grow good relation with the clients and increase their sales.

If we need to survive, we need to take risks. Knowing the risk in building a company, Harpreet had a strong intention to prove that he is not a 'zero'. He fights a lot, takes risks, and in the end, we can see his glory. As he always says, "Even Spiderman has to take risks, I am just a salesman".
